Country experts needed ! With the exception of Britain & Ireland, Norway, Spain, Indonesia and the USA, we do not have local country residents providing FRL information. If you reside in one of the many countries not covered and have contacts with the hikers and climbers of your country, please contact me. Thank you, Andy Martin, oldadit @ gmail.com ******************************************************************************** PROMINENT FRONTRUNNERS ******************************************************************************** This list tracks hikers from all over the globe who have impressive hikes/climbs of peaks with high prominence. Hopefully it helps to popularize prominence based hiking. If you know of someone not listed that deserves recognition, please let us know. Compiled by Andy Martin from reported info and Lists Of John (LOJ) by John Kirk: http://listsofjohn.com/index.html Peakbagger (PB) by Greg Slayden: http://www.peakbagger.com Hill Bagging by Simon Edwards: http://www.hill-bagging.co.uk Marilyn and Humps by Mark Trengove: https://www.rhsoc.uk Baggers without Borders (BwB) by Mark Trengove: https://sites.google.com/site/europeaklist/international-peak-baggers-registers-halls-of-fame Peakbook by Morten Helgesen: https://peakbook.org Email Andy at oldadit @ gmail.com with needed updates or revisions. List is online at: http://sites.google.com/site/oldadit/FRL.html http://tinyurl.com/6qf3xsa http://www.cohp.org (old copy) Current as of February 16, 2021. ** = info added after this date. Prominence is also know as "shoulder drop" in the USA, or just "drop" in the British Isles. It is defined as the elevation difference between a peak and the lowest contour that encircles it and no higher summit. See the Prominence section on www.cohp.org and the prominence site www.peaklist.org for further discussions on why prominence is a useful way to measure mountains. ******************************************************************************** WORLD WIDE ******************************************************************************** 1) World Top 50 by Prominence Over 100 listings are from James Stone http://clachliath.com Many thanks James Map: http://peaklist.org/WWmaps/world50.jpg List: http://peaklist.org/WWlists/WorldTop50.html https://www.peakbagger.com/list.aspx?lid=402 Cut point 11,598', Mount Blackburn 7 summits = Denali, Everest, Kili, Aconcagua, Carstensz, Vinson, Elbrus 7 islands = HP 7 largest islands by area wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_islands_by_area Carstensz, Gunnbjorn, Kinabalu, Kerinci, Fuji, Madagascar HP, Baffin HP Madagascar HP and Baffin HP are not in the World Top 50 list. Barb Byron 1,000+ of Durango CO Norman Clyde ? T.M. Bannon ? Surveyor 1889-1915 when 50 peaks was a good season. Ludwig Purtscheller ? 1700 peaks: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_Purtscheller unknown 1,000+? a few New England Hikers They use 200' drop in N.E., makes it tough to accurately count the 300' drop peaks Note that half a contour interval can be added at unmarked summits and saddles. Thus an unmarked peak showing 7 full contour intervals of 40 feet (same as 8 actual rising contour lines between saddle and summit) can also add 20 feet for an interpolated summit height, and 20 feet more drop for the saddle, giving expected drop of 320', and we assume this peak meets the 300' drop criteria. Another way of stating this - assuming 40' contour intervals, the calculation formula should be 40xN, where N is the number of contour above the saddle. This assumes summit and saddle elevations are not available. We realize that 7 full contour intervals of 40 feet does not give 100% certainty of 300 foot prominence. However, the 7 contour interval standard was in existence for 300' summits well before this FRL. Per Alan Dawson, out of 1553 Marilyns, only 179 are in England, 156 are in Wales, 1214 are in Scotland and 5 are on the Isle of Man (one is joint English/Welsh). There are an additional 453 Marilyns on the whole island of Ireland, as listed by Clem Clements. Marilyns have 150 meter (492') drop. 6). In this case, the peak(s) that just missed the cut are added to replace the one(s) where access is prohibited. The peak(s) missing are listed in [] $ = Every 2000'P peak (minimal prominence) in this region was climbed, and the number listed is the total number of 2000'P peaks in this region. In the USA only states with 30 or more of these peaks are tracked. See RULES section E. for more info. External We only link to this list and the corresponding FRL. You will need to enter your statistics on these external sites. Minimum 25 to list - climbers of at least 25 of the listed peaks can get listed in the FRL. Minimum half - climbers of at least half the listed peaks can get listed in the FRL. Note: There are a few cases like Portugal, Taiwan, Oregon 1K, AL, etc where few participants are identified, and we are temporarily listing hikers that fall under the cut. This is to build interest in these categories. MH = Abbreviation for minimum half above. Minimum 6, may rise - currently need 6 peaks to get listed, but may need more in the future. Minimum 10, will rise - currently need 10 peaks to get listed, will need more at some future date. Eventual minimum 25 - current minimum is lowest number shown, but the minimum will rise as participation rises. Updates:Email is sent out three times a year requesting updates. The cut off dates for these big updates are: April 30 August 31 December 31 Thus a good time to send in your update information is in the week before these dates, or within a few days after the date, if you are offline. However you are welcome to send in information more often, say after a big hiking vacation. Probably best not to send in more than one update per month, to make my life a bit easier. I will manually add your information to the FRL file as soon as it comes in, but may not upload the file immediately. Background Information: This listing was started in 2001 with the goal of popularizing prominence based peakbagging worldwide. It is called the Prominence Front Runners List, or FRL for short. The term "Front Runners" comes from the county high point Front Runners list found on cohp.org. In theory the list could be "unitless", with just top 50, top 100, etc. accomplishments tracked. But in practice units have proved more popular in cases like the 1500 meter drop worldwide Ultras or the 300 foot drop summits in the USA. Initially much of the data was gathered via email. These days most data comes from information entered by peakbaggers on sites like peakbagger, listsofjohn and hill-bagging. Since the listing is prepared manually we have set minimum standards to avoid including lists with hundreds of completers. For example the World 50 listing never tracked those with 7 peaks climbed, which would force inclusion of 230+ very worthy mountaineers listed on 7summits.com. ******************************************************************************** RULES ******************************************************************************** "In the great sport of mountaineering there are, thank heaven, no rules, and only one absolutely general principle, that of getting up." Wilfrid Noyce, Snowdon Biography from www.markhorrell.com Those that agree with this fine sentiment are advised to read no further ... Note that these guidelines only apply to this FRL Others are free to come up with their own "rules" for their own FRLs. A. Difficulty No difficulty waivers. B. Access not allowed If access is prohibited on peak in question 365 days a year, and you have the skill and desire needed to climb it, and you are prevented from reaching the top by your moral code and/or the access barriers in place, you can replace it with a lower peak to claim list completion. Note that this only applies to completed lists, on uncompleted lists count only the peaks you have actually hiked. Please do not request this waiver for a peak you do not have the skills and desire to climb. The lower peak(s) are the ones immediately below the cutoff for the list in question. This completion will be noted a such. For example: NV 50! John Vitz@ [Bald Mountain] Indicates Bald Mountain was skipped due to bad access - active patrols of a secret military base in this case. Peak #51 on the NV list, North Peak, is climbed in place of Bald Mountain. Note that if access on Bald Mountain is opened, John will probably want to climb it, and remove the "@". The current maintainer of this FRL, Andy Martin, believes that a peak that is both very difficult and has bad access, like Spider Rock AZ or Kauai high point HI, should not be eligible for the access waiver. This policy is subject to change in the future. Those who believe they are being discriminated against can: 1. Specify the peak that is blocking your completion 2. Provide the name of a peak or route you have climbed as a replacement that is as hard or harder than this peak. C. Mechanized transport. Reaching or traveling close to a summit with assist of mechanized ground transport such as car, truck, 4wd, snow-cat, ski tram, cog RR is allowed in this FRL. Draft ground animal assist (horses, mules, llamas, etc) is allowed. All forms of water transport are allowed. This means that the Colorado Mountain Club guideline requesting a minimal 3000' vertical hiking gain on the way up a peak is not used. This does not mean all future modes of mechanized ground transport will automatically be allowed (for example, powered mechanized leg assists would not be). However, hikers are encouraged to record on their peak lists when mechanized transport was used. For example, on peaks that I used mechanized transport they are noted with: AU = Drove auto close to top AU+ = Auto + short walk TK = Drove truck close to top JP = Drove 4wd close to top TRAM = Took cable tramway close to top COGRR = Took cog RR close to top Aerial modes of transport directly to the summit, or past standard base camps, are not allowed. (Except for summits that you can drive up in a passenger car.) Prohibited modes include planes, choppers, hang gliders, parachutes, space shuttle, balloon lawnchair and all other aerial modes of transport. Thus George Hopkins does not get credit for an ascent of Devils Tower: http://www.nationalparkstraveler.com/2009/11/true-tales-national-parks-get-me-devils-tower4886 Similarly Didier Desalle is not credited with an ascent of the worlds most prominent peak. Descent from the summit with hang glider or parafoil that you have carried up there while hiking up from a standard base camp carries no penalty. D. Volcanic eruptions and other height changes We note the pre-eruption prominence of Saint Helens was 5917', a good bit higher than the current 4605+. Thus when Fred Beckey climbed Saint Helens back in '45 he could claim both a "top 10" WA prominence ascent, and a top 50 lower 48 ascent. (Saint Helens was #28 in lower 48 prominence prior to May 18, 1980.) Those who climb Saint Helens today can make neither of these claims. The pertinent categories are Lower 48 USA (the 50 best by prominence in lower 58) and The Ultras with 1500 m. (4,921') prominence My take on these is: Lower 48 USA - you can claim either CA Lassen Peak Lassen Peak 31N4E 5,217+ or pre eruption Saint Helens as counting for this list, but not both. Fred can't claim 51 of Americas 50 finest by prominence. The Ultras Pre-eruption Saint Helens ascents get credit for full prominence at that time, thus Fred gets to count an Ultra while those climbing the peak these days do not. Bob Bolton, Duane Gilliland, Steve Sheriff, Doug Kasian, Dean Molen and Karen Jones climbed Saint Helens before the eruption. E. List errors. If you complete a list that is later found to have errors, you are still a completer, and need not hike the additional peaks. However, if you have not yet completed the list, you need to take the corrections into account. This "Grandfather" rule is similar to the one used by the state High Pointers, and is designed to protect deceased and disabled completers. Note that my personal hiking practice is to visit the additional points and "recomplete" the revised list, and it is suggested that living completers in good health do the same. F. What is a 2,000' prominence peak ? For the purposes of this FRL list a 2,000' peak is one shown to have at least 2,000' prominence either by current and accurate maps, or by trustworthy survey data. Interpolated contour elevations are not used for summit or saddle elevations. This is referred to as minimal, or "clean" prominence. This means that "maybe 2000' prominence" peaks are not counted for Century club totals. For locations without accurate maps, additional data like hand held GPS readings, barometric readings, and satellite data may be used, as long as an adequate "safety factor" is employed. This issue also comes into play on the category $ - Every 2000'P peak (minimal prominence) in this region was climbed, and the number listed is the total number of 2000'P peaks in this region. In the USA only states with 30 or more of these peaks are tracked. For 2K list completion this FRL does not require you to also hike every peak in a region that might have 2,000' prominence, once all uncertainties are resolved. However prudent hikers might want to hike these as well, as some of these peaks will eventually be shown to be 2K. G. Eligibility Open to all humans on earth - past, present, and future. All ages, races, creeds, etc. welcome. Peakliars are subject to exclusion. Not open to other species, even Luna, the canine centurion. Infants and others carried to the summit must indicate the number of caries in their totals. H. Scope - on planet Earth, above water surface. I. Repeats - are not counted. J. Islands in lakes. Prominence varies with pool elevation. Climber gets credit for prominence existing at the time they climbed the peak. ******************************************************************************** FUTURE EXPANSION ******************************************************************************** This FRL could be expanded to include: 1. Add "possible" categories for 2,000', 5,000', etc. prominence. 2. County prominence completions. 3. All 2000' completions in states with 10 or more of these (would open up several eastern states) 4. Mechanized speed records 5. Radius from home categories - with and without Canada and Mexico peaks in consideration. 6. Hikes of 1000 meters, 4000', etc prominence. 7. etc, etc. However, a list maintainer will have to be found for these, or Andy's salary will have to be increased.
